A hair follicle drug test is a type of drug screening that detects the presence of drugs or their metabolites in a person’s hair sample. The test involves collecting a small section of hair, typically from the root or close to the scalp, and analyzing it for drug residues.
How it Works
When a person uses drugs, the substances are absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to the hair follicles through the blood vessels. As the hair grows, it incorporates these drug residues into the hair shaft. The test detects these residues, which can remain in the hair for a significant period, typically up to 90 days.
Testing Process
Hair sample collection: A small section of hair, usually around 200 strands, is cut from the person’s head, close to the scalp.
Initial screening: The hair sample is tested using an immunoassay, which detects the presence of drugs or their metabolites.
Confirmation testing: If the initial test is positive, a more sensitive and specific test, such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), is performed to confirm the result.
Advantages
Long detection window: Hair follicle drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, making them useful for identifying long-term drug use.
Non-invasive: Hair collection is a less invasive procedure compared to urine or saliva tests.
Accurate: Hair follicle drug tests are considered one of the most accurate methods of drug detection.
Commonly Tested Substances
Cocaine
Marijuana (THC)
Amphetamines/Methamphetamines
Opiates
PCP
Hair Follicle Drug Test Uses
Workplace drug testing: To screen applicants, periodically test employees, or test employees after an accident or other issue.
Forensic and legal testing: During criminal investigations or child protection cases.
Drug rehabilitation programs: To monitor long-term drug use or abuse.
Probation and parole: To ensure individuals remain abstinent from illicit substances during supervision.
Note: Cleansing shampoos or products may not effectively remove drug residues from hair follicles, making it challenging to pass a hair follicle drug test.
